Foundations Of Faith

A constant goal for each of us should be to deepen our personal relationship with the Heavenly Father. God desires a close and constant relationship with us. He wants to walk beside us all year long. That should be a goal every day of the year.

John 15:5 reminds us that only because of and in the midst of our relationship with God can we be successful. “I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.”

John makes it pretty clear. If we want to be successful and accomplish our goals, we should rely on the Master Planner to guide us. Take time to ask God's guidance as you make a list of things you want to achieve.

Don't do this hurriedly but earnestly look for the things God wants you to do in all areas of your life
:

  • Spiritually - Plan to read the Bible through or complete a specific Bible study.
  • Personally - Organize your home so your family can have more time together. Exercise more. Watch television less.
  • Mentally - Take a class about a subject you have always been interested in. Professionally - Share a new idea with your boss and ask for the opportunity to implement it.
  • Socially - Mend a relationship. Meet a new friend. Invite a neighbor to church.

Perhaps this is a new idea to you. Maybe you need to take a step back and establish a relationship with God. He is waiting for you. If you don't know Him, you need to put that first on your list - for this very moment.

  1. Tell God you need to make a new start. First thing to do is to wipe the old slate clean. How do you do that? The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” In order to get rid of the “old,” we must admit to God we are sinners, that we know we have not been living as He wants us to, and that we need to be changed from that pattern.
  2. Tell God you need a new heart. Becoming a new creation involves a change of heart. Admit to God you are a sinner and you need a “new” heart. God loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for you. He gave His life for you. And He wants you to commit yourself to Him with all your heart. Trust Him.
  3. Tell God you believe in Him. God promised in John 3:16 that “whoever believes in Him (Jesus) shall not perish but have eternal life.” Wow! God wants us to be with Him forever and He has provided a way for us to do that. Believe that Jesus died for you. Accept that tremendous love God has for you.
  4. Know that you will be with God forever in heaven. After three days, Jesus rose from the dead and returned to heaven to be with God. He is there waiting for you and me and for all those who have accepted His offer of eternal life.
