“Humble yourselves…and he will lift you up.” Jas 4:10 NIV
Peter Marshall, chaplain to the U.S. Senate, once prayed, “Lord, when we are wrong make us willing to change, and when we are right make us easy to live with.” When God promotes you to a higher level of responsibility, He calls you to a deeper level of submission. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” Each time God blesses us with something good He runs the risk that it’ll take our focus off Him. Indeed, the more God blesses us with, the more self-absorbed we tend to become. So His Word says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (Jas 4:7 NIV). Submission brings strength. It’s the submitted life that has the power to overcome. Every time the enemy meets with this kind of resistance, he flees.
The Koh-I-Noor Diamond is among the world’s most spectacular gems. It’s part of the British Crown Jewels, and was first presented to Queen Victoria by the Maharajah of India when he was just a boy. As a grown man he visited her again and asked to see it. Taking the diamond in his hand, he knelt before her and presented it again, saying, “Your Majesty, I gave you this jewel when I was but a child, too young to really understand what I was doing. Now I want to give it to you in the fullness of my strength, with all my heart and affection and gratitude, now and forever, fully realizing what I do.” Today, kneel and say, “Lord, I give myself fully and completely to You!”
